What have you learned this semester? How have your interests developed?
I took 8 classes and 6.5 credits in total this semester. The classes I took are: Computer Science II, Calculus I, Discrete Mathematics, Elementary Chinese, Demystifying Finance, Chinese Calligraphy, Excel and VBA, and this course Ideals into Practice. I worked as Project Manager Coordinator in the University Communication Center and served as SSP Ambassador for the Sustainability Office. I was able to make all of this work because my jobs had very flexible schedules thanks to my amazing supervisors and the general work culture and because I meticulously planned out my time. At the end of the semester, I did well on all of my exams and celebrated hitting personal goals such as working out more consistently. I went through a lot in terms of personal life and was able to develop as a result of it. I am incredibly grateful for everything this semester has been and I am glad that I have the opportunity to share this experience in this capstone piece.
My interests have become more diversified but focused. My favorite classes were Demystifying Finance, Computer Science II, and Discrete Mathematics. I enjoy the mental exercise that these classes provide as well as the clear and logical thinking that is essential to do well in them. I have become more confident that I want to study Computer Science and am considering adding Econometrics as a major. I’ve met with career counselors to talk about ways to explore these interests and they have all helped me to map out a rough path that I am excited to embark on this coming Fall semester. I know that I enjoy learning languages to supplement my studies and satiate my curiosity about the world and will continue to study Chinese. I know that my language studies will not stop with Chinese but instead will continue well into my adult life as it offers me my much needed relaxation every week. My favorite part of Chinese Calligraphy was the calm that emerged in my mind while dipping my brush in ink and seeing it manifest onto the page. Some personal interests I have developed during the semester was sending letters to my family and friends around the world. I want to continue with calligraphy and watercolor so that I can send beautiful letters to them and all the new people I will meet around the world.
The increased intensity of my classes affected me similar to increased weight in the training room. Although there were times I struggled to even stand up, I would nevertheless stand up and I became all the more stronger for it. Showing up every day and being consistent is the most rewarding thing although it is important to listen to your mind and body and get adequate rest. I feel empowered by the things I’ve accomplished and learned this semester. And I will continue to develop as a scholar, a professional, and an individual.
